Digital Transformation and New Logistics Solutions for the Retail Sector
The decline of marketplaces and the digital transformation of retail is the subject of an opinion article in Observador, signed by Lyzer's CTO, Diogo Silva.

Diogo Silva, Lyzer’s co-founder and CTO, has written an opinion piece for Portuguese newspaper Observador on “the digital transformation of retail - the decline of marketplaces like Amazon”. In this article, he takes a close look at the changes taking place in retail and the solutions that allow brands to reconnect with their audience.
The ideas presented are deeply aligned with our vision and mission: to help businesses – and retailers – regain control of their logistics operation and the experience they offer their customers.
Marketplace models: advantages and limits
In recent years, platforms like Amazon have profoundly shaped the e-commerce landscape. With models centered on gigantic warehouses and ultra-fast deliveries, these companies have grown on the back of convenience and scale. But, as our CTO points out, this growth is no longer inevitable. The market is maturing - and with it, the way brands approach their digital presence.
“For years, e-commerce giants dominated the sector, but their growth is no longer so inevitable. Brands and retailers are exploring alternative strategies to maintain profitability and control over their customers' experience.” - Diogo Silva
Two main marketplace models are highlighted:
- The Amazon model, which relies on centralized logistics and promises next-day deliveries.
- Quick commerce, such as Glovo or Uber Eats, which focus on proximity and deliveries within minutes.
Both models are powerful – especially for emerging brands, which benefit from the visibility and logistics infrastructure on offer.
“It's no longer an exercise in futurology to imagine a scenario in which a consumer orders a shirt at lunchtime with the expectation of wearing it at dinner.”
- Diogo Silva
However, for established brands, the challenges mount up. To name but a few: duplication of costs between warehouses, physical stores and digital channels; operational inefficiencies (since traditional structures are not always prepared for the demands of direct-to-consumer e-commerce); or loss of control over the customer experience, with reduced margins due to the commissions charged by the platforms.
The future of distribution
The article highlights a paradigm shift that is already underway: brands want to take back the reins. They want to be closer to their customers, control the way their products are presented and offer more personalized and consistent experiences.
“Another critical limitation for big brands on third-party marketplaces is the loss of control over the customer experience. Selling through external platforms restricts brands' ability to manage the presentation of their products, interact directly with consumers and personalize the purchase journey.”
- Diogo Silva
The future, as we see it, will be decentralized. Brands will invest in their own, more efficient, technological and customer-centric solutions.
“The future of e-commerce points to a more decentralized model, where brands will have to invest in technology and logistics solutions to compete with the efficiency and convenience of the industry giants.”
- Diogo Silva
